AECOM is proud to announce that our Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge (HZMB) and Hong Kong Port project has won the Grand Prize of the inaugural Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Grand Award 2023 in the Infrastructure Category.

The Hong Kong Port sets a great example in leading the future of construction. Its pioneering use of offsite modular fabrication using MiC and DfMA have since become a key trend in construction in Hong Kong today, and its inclusion of environment-friendly features provides sustainable solutions for the infrastructure’s daily operations.

Completed in merely four years, some of the key features of the Hong Kong Port include the integration of BIM and 3D scanning as early as 2014. It was also the first to use vertical lifting and horizontal jacking in Hong Kong for the installation of 81 prefabricated roof segments.

The installation of a District Cooling System saves 3.5-million-kilowatt hour of electricity and reduces 2,500 tons of CO₂ emission. Treated effluent from the onsite tertiary sewage treatment plant is used for toilet flushing, saving 2,700 cubic meters of water.

With the opening of the HZMB and the Hong Kong Port, travel time to the western part of GBA has been reduced from approximately four hours to 40 minutes, driving economic and social integration in the region. AECOM is proud to have provided planning, investigation, detailed design, contract administration, site supervision, and construction management for this mega project.

AECOM has also been honored with the Certificate of Merit for the Cross Bay Link, Tseung Kwan O (TKO) project in the Infrastructure Category. The Cross Bay Link is the first marine crossing in Hong Kong to combine carriageway, cycle track and footway in one bridge. It connects to the cycle track network in TKO, and forms a 3.1-mile (5-kilometer) long circular route along the coastline of Junk Bay. This encourages cycling as a more sustainable and healthy way of going around the city. With the bridge’s completion in 2022, it has reduced travel time between TKO and Kowloon East by about 20 minutes.

This recognition from the HKIE highlights our commitment to sustainable development and innovative engineering practices. We are proud of all team members who contributed to these successes and earned the trust of our client partners.
